Senegal's Macky Sall Enters Race for UN Secretary-General

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has been formally nominated by Burundi to succeed UN Secretary-General António Guterres, whose term concludes in 2026. Analysts suggest that the current composition of the UN Security Council may favor Sall's candidacy, as three African nations - the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, and Somalia - currently hold seats on the Council.

Sall's supporters have spoken of his track record of advocacy, saying that his primary mission during his tenure as Chairperson of the African Union (February 2022 - February 2023) was to "amplify Africa's voice within international bodies". Burundi, which currently holds the UN chairmanship, is spearheading his nomination.

Two other candidates have also been nominated: Michelle Bachelet, Former president of Chile and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Rafael Grossi, Argentine diplomat and current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
