Chad Moves Refugees Away From Sudan Border as Tensions Escalate

The Chadian government has begun relocating refugees away from the Sudanese border after a cross-border attack that left 17 people dead. President Mahamat Idriss Déby had previously threatened retaliation after the assault, which also targeted mourners attending a funeral service.

In an official statement, the Chadian government said it has bolstered its security presence along the frontier and suggested the possibility of conducting operations within Sudanese territory. Local authorities said the specific group responsible for the attack has not yet been identified.

While Chad officially closed its eastern border - after clashes linked to the Sudanese civil war that claimed the lives of five Chadian soldiers - refugees fleeing the intense violence continue to cross into the country in search of safety.
