'Increase Our Salaries,' Namibians Say After Transport Fare Hike

Namibians have reacted to the government's decision to hike public transportation fares with calls for a corresponding increase in public sector salaries. The government announced that the adjustment, effective May 18, applies to taxis, minibuses, and inter-city buses.

Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi said the decision is driven by rising fuel prices as a result of ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which is impacting Namibia's economy.

For commuters, however, the hike further exacerbates the rising cost of living. "A 15% increase might not seem huge on paper, but for ordinary Namibians who rely on taxis every day, it adds up very quickly," one passenger said.
