Africa: US Supports UN Permanent Seat for the Africa

28 August 2000

Abuja — The United Sates supports the granting of a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council to the African continent, President Bill Clinton said this weekend, during his state visit to Nigeria.

The choice of which country should represent Africa, he said, must be made by the African people.

"There should be a permanent African seat, but that should be determined by African nations," said President Clinton in answer to a question at a joint press conference with his host, president Olusegun Obasanjo.

If it makes sense for that seat to go to Nigeria, said Clinton, it's for African people to decide, stressing that it was "not the business of America or the Permanent members" to make that decision.
