Africare, Magic Johnson, Others Kick Off New Partnership Combating HIV/AIDS

Washington DC — At a reception last Friday evening, Feb. 9, Africare kicked off a new partnership with the Magic Johnson Foundation, the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, Black Entertainment Television, Washington ABC-Radio station Smooth Jazz 105.9, and Cable Positive to promote an awareness of the critical HIV/AIDS issues that affect children, families, and communities all over the world. Held at the BET Jazz Supper Club in Washington, D.C., the reception was one of the highlights during NBA weekend.

In a standing-room only crowd of African diplomats, NBA affiliates, corporate sponsors, and star athletes, Africare was recognized for its 30 years of work in Africa and, more specifically, for its programs fighting AIDS in Africa. Magic Johnson encouraged everyone to support the partnership's efforts to combat HIV/AIDS and stressed the importance of maintaining good health. He strongly asserted that, "We need everyone to fight in this fight. HIV/AIDS can happen to anyone....It can happen to you." Africare's president, C. Payne Lucas, reinforced this position by stating, "Although the NBA All-Star game is very important, the most important event of the weekend is going on right here - Africa is dying. The people of Africa need our help."

Lucas presented Magic Johnson with an Honorary Africare Life Membership for his community service work. Founded in 1991, the Magic Johnson Foundation has raised more than 18 million dollars for community-based organizations serving the health, educational, and social needs of children residing in inner city communities.

Africare is a leader in aid to Africa as well as the oldest and largest African-American organization specializing in African aid. Founded in 1971, Africare has assisted millions of people in 35 African nations with a broad array of programs in development and relief, including extensive work in HIV/AIDS prevention and support to orphans of AIDS. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Africare has field offices in 27 African countries. Africare is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
