Nigeria: London Official Resigns Over Trip

25 January 2008

An advisor on racial issues to the mayor of London has resigned from the Greater London Authority after visiting a project in Nigeria, then falsely denying she had done so.

This Day newspaper of Lagos reported earlier this month that the mayor of London sent representatives to visit Kamp Africa, a youth programme in the Lagos area, to forge relations with the programme.

In response, the mayor's office contacted allAfrica to say that "No representatives from the Mayor of London's office have been sent to Nigeria."

However, the Greater London Authority (GLA) issued a statement this week saying that one of its officials, Rosemary Emodi, had lied about the trip. Asked by GLA in response to inquiries by the BBC whether she had visted Kamp Afrika, she denied having done so.

"It has been now become clear," said the GLA, "that the formal statement made by Rosemary Emodi was untrue. She has resigned with immediate effect."
