As Nigeria celebrates 50 years of Independence, the Sullivan Foundation will convene a timely and provocative discussion about the nation, including leadership issues, religious tensions and repercussions related to the December 25th bombing attempt.
The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation has announced a symposium entitled "Nigeria Today: Perceptions, Challenges and Opportunities." The forum, which will include a round table and panel discussion, will take place on Thursday, February 11th, from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM at the National Press Club located at 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
In addition to His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the roundtable discussion will include Ambassador Andrew Young, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation, and the HRH Emir Of Ilorin. A subsequent panel discussion will include Ambassador Princeton Lyman, former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Bill Fitzgerald, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Africa Bureau; and Ali Moshiri, Vice President for Africa, Chevron Corporation.
Commenting on the upcoming Nigeria forum, Ambassador Andrew Young stated: "To many, the very name Nigeria is a synonym for corruption. Yet in truth, Nigeria is America's strongest and most important trading partner. With more than 350 different ethnic groups, Nigeria is that continent's largest and most educated population and may hold the answer to many challenges of the 21st century. I am looking forward to a productive discussion."
Inspired by the life and principles of the late Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan, the Foundation bearing his name exists to promote the political, entrepreneurial and intellectual leadership of the African Diaspora and friends of Africa, and to advocate on behalf of Africa and the world's vulnerable people. The Foundation's mission also includes promoting corporate social responsibility and economic development on the African Continent.
