Gunmen killed more than a dozen people when they opened fire on hotel beaches at a popular resort about 40 kilometres east of Abidjan on Sunday, news agencies report.

Reuters reported President Alassane Ouattara as saying 14 civilians and two soldiers were killed at Grand Bassam.

Fratmat.info said six attackers were killed. It quoted the Minister of the Interior and Security, Hamed Bakayoko, as saying: "Three hotels were attacked by gunmen. The security forces intervened immediately. Six terrorists were neutralized."

It added that a government official said "sweeps are underway" to ensure the safety of people and property.

Agence France-Presse reported a witness as telling the agency that the attackers shouted: "Allahu akbar". Another witness said they were heavily armed and wore balaclavas.
