More than 100,000 inhabitants of Abyei - virtually the entire population of the area 0 were displaced by renewed conflict in the disputed region in May 2011.Their homes and properties were looted and burned to the ground and they now remain stranded in dire conditions in makeshift camps in South Sudan where they suffer form lack of food, clean water and sanitation. They are unable to return to their towns and villages due to ongoing insecurity in the area.
