Kenyans should be prepared to pay more for medical insurance starting from the first of May after the High Court threw out a petition by the Central Organization of Trade Unions seeking to block the proposed move by the National Hospital Insurance Fund to increase monthly contributions. According to NHIF officials, Kenyan workers will have the new, increased contributions deducted from their monthly salaries beginning end of April. The lowest paid worker will now pay 150 shillings a month, while those earning in excess of 100,000 shillings a month will remit 2,000 shillings, up from the current standard rate of 320 shillings. Here is Evelyn Wambui with details of the new, mandatory NHIF contributions.
