AllAfrica interviews Phyllis Omido of Kenya, a recipient of the 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize for grassroots environmental activism. After years of struggle against government apathy, threats, and arrest, Phyllis and her NGO the Center for Justice, Governance, and Environmental Action (CJGEA)  were able to shut down a lead smelting plant that had been contaminating the environment and poisoning the community in the Uwino Uhuru slum near Mombasa, Kenya.
