The Presidency has announced that government is ready to compensate families of the Marikana victims. Thirty-four striking miners were shot dead by police in August 2012 at Lonmin's platinum mine in the North West. In the preceding week, 10 people were killed, including two police officers and two security guards. The South African Police Service has instructed its attorneys to make offers of payments in full settlement of claims that are not under criminal investigation.
