Liberia: National Elections Commission Begins Hearing Into Alleged Electoral Malpractice in Lofa

Monrovia — The motion filed by lawyers representing Momo Cyrus, the Senator-elect of Lofa County, requesting the National Elections Commission (NEC) hearing officer to dismiss a complaint filed by CDC candidate Moses Kollie, outlining irregularities during the Lofa Senatorial Election on October 10, has been rejected.

The CDC contended that these irregularities played a pivotal role in their candidate's defeat, and they are calling for a recount of votes in nine specific polling places out of the 424 across Lofa County.

During the initial hearing, lawyers for the defendant, Momo Cyrus, argued that the case lacks merit and was filed prematurely. In response, lawyers representing the CDC countered that the case is based on merit and has substantial evidence supporting their claims. They also highlighted that the case was filed within the legal timeframe, taking into account information provided by the National Elections Commission regarding the finalization of the 424 polling places in Lofa County.

The presiding hearing officer ruled in favor of the motion made by the prosecuting lawyers, granting them permission to present their witnesses by 2:00 pm on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Simultaneously, the motion presented by the defendant was dismissed.

The case is now scheduled to proceed tomorrow at 2:00 pm at the headquarters of the National Elections Commission in Monrovia.
