The Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), the umbrella body of all lawyers in the country is warning citizens, media stakeholders and political actors to avoid spreading fear or politicizing the ongoing arson trial involving former Speaker Fonati Koffa, himself a lawyer, and three other lawmakers.
The warning followed a recent surge in protests, particularly around the Temple of Justice, housing the several courts. Cllr. Bornor Varmah, LNBA's President, on Monday said political interference or public incitement could undermine the rule of law.
Cllr. Varmah reminded Liberians that under Liberian law, the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
" The burden of proof lies with the state, through the Ministry of Justice, to establish guilt in accordance with the law " he said.
The bar president noted that no one, regardless of status or affiliation, is above the law, but at the same time, all individuals are entitled to due process and equal protection under the Constitution.
He however, urged the Ministry of Justice to take full charge of the investigation and prosecution, and to do so with transparency, legal integrity, and strict adherence to constitutional guarantees--including the right to a fair trial.
Koffa, together with Representatives Abu Kamara (District #15 Montserrado County), Dixon W. Seboe (District #16 Montserrado County) and Jacob C. Debee (District #3, Grand Gedeh County), are facing multiple criminal charges related to the December 2024 fire that destroyed the Joint Chambers of the Capitol Building.
