CR17 Saga Looms Over Ramaphosa in South African Parliament

President Cyril Ramaphosa has said that his 2017 electoral campaign to lead the African National Congress, commonly referred to as the CR17 campaign, brought up an important question of internal party funding. This comes after National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise denied Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane's request to have Ramaphosa answer an urgent query regarding the contentious campaign during a question and answer session in the National Assembly. A U.S.$33,000 donation made to Ramaphosa by Bosasa, a firm accused of acquiring government tenders illegally, to fund his bid to lead the ruling party has raised controversy, the results of which may lead to a court battle with Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
