U.S. Says Airstrike Killed al-Shabaab Mastermind of Kenya Attack

The U.S. Africa Command (Africom) announced an air strike that killed two al-Shabaab members in Somalia, described as "an individual associated with the attack on Manda Bay and his wife, who was also a known al-Shabaab member."  An American soldier and two contractors were killed in a January 5 al-Shabaab attack on the Manda Bay Airfield, an oceanfront Kenya Defense Force base on the country's northern border with Somalia, where U.S. forces provide counter-terrorism training for African partners in the region.

Somali national army soldiers stand in formation during a logistics course graduation ceremony following 14 weeks training with the U.S. 10th Mountain division.
