Police Units Raid Offices of South African Lottery Commission

The Hawks and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) have raided the offices of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and Metrofile, a document storage company, after obtaining a search and seizure order from a Pretoria magistrate. President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a proclamation in November 2020 authorising the SIU to probe alleged corruption and maladministration involving the NLC. The SIU has been authorised to investigate serious maladministration in connection with the affairs of the NLC, which includes unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property as well as improper or unlawful conduct by employees or officials of the NLC.
