Africa Going All Out at Commonwealth Games 2022

Birmingham is hosting this year's Commonwealth Games which kicked off on July 28 with a spectacular opening ceremony according to Commonwealth Sports. The Games, which run to and run to August 8, 2022, are overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation, which controls the sporting programme and selects host cities.

Africa is well represented by 21 countries - Botswana, Cameroon, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, eSwatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Togo, Uganda, Tanzania and Zamibia. The athletes will participate in various sporting events - including athletics and swimming, weightlifting and basketball, where they hope to smash records and take home gold - but where silver and bronze would also be highly valued.

Although there are 56 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 72 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games, as dependent territories - this includes the four UK home nations England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who send separate teams to the games.
