Ruling Party Wins Angolan General Election, Lourenco is President

Angolan President Joao Lourenco won a second term in office on Monday August 29, 2022 after he was declared the winner of the August 24 election.

The official results from the National Electoral Commission (CNE) showed the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola, known by its Portuguese initials MPLA, had received 51.17% of the vote. The opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, known by its Portuguese initials, UNITA, received 43.95% in the final tally, Deutsche Welle reports.

At a press conference, the head of the commission, Manuel Pereira da Silva, said the electoral body "proclaims Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco, president of the republic."

The CNE registered about 14.3 million voters to participate in the election. Angolans who live abroad were eligible to cast their ballots from overseas for the first time.

The election was seen as the most tightly-contested in decades. UNITA and the MPLA have been rivals since before independence and have fought a civil war intermittently for over 25 years, in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed.
