Substandard Meds - Gambians Want Justice After Deaths of Children

Indian health authorities have halted all production at the main factory of Maiden Pharmaceuticals near New Delhi after its cough syrups were linked to the deaths of dozens of children in Gambia.

Maiden Pharmaceuticals manufactured four cough and cold syrups that the World Health Organization (WHO) says might be responsible for the deaths of dozens of children in The Gambia.

Deutsche Welle reports that three more children who had been admitted to hospitals for acute kidney injury after taking the syrup have died, increasing the death toll to 69. Gambian authorities say 81 more children are still in hospital fighting for their lives.

On October 5, 2022, the WHO issued an alert against four cough and cold syrups - Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup, and Magrip N Cold Syrup - that it says may be responsible for the deaths.

Mourners at a vigil in The Gambia demand justice for 66 children that died from acute kidney injuries linked to cough syrups from India.
