New Date Set for Ethiopia, Tigray Peace Talks In South Africa

The Ethiopian government announced on October 20, 2022 that African Union (AU) peace talks led by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo will take place in South Africa on October 24, 2022 to help resolve the conflict in Tigray. According to officials, AU-led peace talks were scheduled for October 8, 2022 but were postponed due to logistical and technical issues.

Earlier this week, World Health Organization (WHO) chief Adhanom Ghebreyesus, an ethnic Tigrayan, warned that time to avert a "genocide" was running out.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the situation in Tigray was "spiraling out of control" as he renewed calls for a cease-fire.
