Suffering, Deaths in Ethiopia's Tigray In Wake of Food Shortages

The suspension of food aid to Ethiopia by the country's two largest food donors is having a devastating impact in Tigray, with more people dying of hunger, according to one of the northern region's top relief officials, writes Samuel Getachew for The New Humanitarian.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Food Programme suspended food aid in April 2023, following allegations that food was being diverted from millions of the most needy people in refugee camps.

On June 15, 2023, Addis Standard reported that Tigray released preliminary findings of a report by a committee established by the interim regional administration of Tigray to investigate the diversion of humanitarian aid in the region. Among the findings was that the Ethiopian federal government entities and Eritrean forces had higher roles in the widescale food aid diversion.

The food crisis in Tigray region has been exacerbated by the conflict that erupted in a full-scale war with Ethiopia from November 2020 to November 2022, which ended with the signing of a peace agreement. The ongoing drought in the region has also added to the food crisis.
