Calls for Reforms as New Security Chiefs Appointed In Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed new military service chiefs alongside a new national security adviser and inspector general of police. The new appointments have been welcomed by the public, especially as they seem to represent a fairly balanced national spread. The security chiefs have been tasked with delivering on their mandates, which include tackling terrorism, banditry, a farmer-herder crisis, communal conflicts and militancy, reports Al Chukwuma Okoli for The Conversation.

The newly appointed security service chiefs face an enormous task, but enhancing the operational efficacy of the national security systems through deliberate structural reforms is imperative. The government has promised to provide the security chiefs with the resources they need to do their jobs effectively.

The new president inherited dire internal security challenges. Insecurity has worsened as Boko Haram militants tightened its grip since 2009 - particularly in the north-east of the country where Borno State, Yobe State and Adamawa State has come under increasing attack.
