Campaigning Heats Up Ahead of Liberian Elections in October

Following the official start on August 5, 2023 of Liberia's 2023 elections, candidates are stepping up campaign activities across the country. A total of 15 registered political parties plus independent candidates are contesting for a range of offices with voting scheduled to take place on October 10. Most attention is focused on the presidential race, in which President George Weah is seeking to win a second term. He faces opposition from a former vice president, Joseph Boakai, former Coca Cola exectuive Alex Cummings, and a number of lesser-known contenders.

"These elections come at a time when the country is once again at a critical juncture in its history," Roman Catholic Bishop Andrew Jagaye Karnley, wrote in the commentary published by Front Page Africa on the importance of voting. Over 1.4 million Liberians are registered to vote, according to the National Elections Commission. Public trust in the National Elections Commission (NEC) has dropped to "near historic lows," according to a Afrobarometer survey in April.
