Algeria Proposes Six-Month Transition Period in Niger

Algeria has proposed an a six-month transition period initiative to resolve the lingering political crisis in Niger, Daily Trust reports. Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf said after his consultative tours to Niger's neigbouring West African countries that "most of the countries we have talked to are against military intervention to end the crisis".

The African Union suspended Niger's membership a month after the coup led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani. A junta was established by what they called, a "faction of military officers". The body's Peace and Security Council once again condemned the coup, and welcomed the actions taken by Ecowas since the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum.
