Niger Crisis - Algeria on Diplomatic Trip to Ecowas Countries

Algeria has sent its foreign minister, Ahmed Attaf, on a mediation tour to Nigeria, Benin and Ghana, in an effort to end the crisis in the Republic of Niger, Vanguard reports.

Algeria said it sent Attaf to the three ECOWAS countries as mandated by the North African country's President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The African Union has suspended the membership of Niger a month after the coup by what they called a "faction of military officers". The body's Peace and Security Council (PSC) once again condemned the coup, and welcomed the actions taken by Ecowas since the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum.

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of the Niger junta, said in a televised broadcast on Saturday night (August 19, 2023) that the army would hand over power to the civilian government within the next three years.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) however, rejected this transition plan.

Voice of America is quoting local analysts as saying that conditions for people in Niger are getting worse, as security appears to be deteriorating. Prices of staple foods such as rice and cooking oil have increased, while the country has endured more violence in the past three weeks than it had since the beginning of the year.
