South Africa Bids Farewell to Zulu Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi

Thousands of mourners gathered for the state funeral of Zulu prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the founder of Inkatha Freedom Party and a Zulu Prince who died aged 95.

Buthelezi passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023 and was accorded a Special Official Funeral, Category 1, at Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal province on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

The special funeral is a recognition reserved for individuals of extraordinary distinction as designated by the president.

In attendance were business leaders and political figures including former president of Nigeria Olusegun Obsanjo and former South African presidents Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and Kgalema Motlanthe and Economic Freedom Front leader Julius Malema.

While delevering the eulogy, President Cyril Ramaphosa described Buthelezi as a courageous and a passionate advocate for the institution of leadership and especially traditional leadership, for women and for rural communities.
