Negotiations Between Sudan's Warring Parties Continue in Jeddah

Negotiations between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been under way in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia since Thursday October 26, 2023. Topics under discussion include a potential ceasefire as well as the delivery of humanitarian aid, Radio Dabanga reports.

Intra-Sudanese talks have also taken place in Ethiopia, which were welcomed by representatives of Norway, UK, and the U.S.

The Jeddah negotiation platform is facilitated by Saudi Arabia and the U.S., in partnership with the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) in the Horn of Africa.

Separately, a broad group of Sudanese civilian actors and stakeholders met in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia to discuss a ceasefire. The preparatory meeting for the Civil Front to Stop the War ended with the formation of a 60-member preparatory leadership committee headed by former Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok to "carry out oversight and supervisory tasks, and follow up on the preparation for the founding conference".

It has been six months since fighting flared up between the SAF and the RSF that operated under ousted leader Omar al-Bashir for 30 years.
