Southern Africa at Risk of Category 5 Cyclones - Experts

Climate experts have warned that, based on current data, the possibility of a Category 5 cyclone in southern Africa caused by to El Niño-related climate conditions should not be ruled out, and that the region is woefully unprepared should it occur, Daily Maverick reports.

Speaking at the the El Niño 2023 Summit hosted at the University of the Western Cape, Professor Erich Fischer - a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment Report - said that Otis, the first Category 5 cyclone in recorded history to strike Mexico, was an indicator of what may occur in southern Africa.

The warning comes after Cyclone Freddy killed hundreds when it blew across Mozambique, Malawi, Madagascar, South Africa and Zimbabwe in February 2023. Additionally, climate experts in June 2023 called on governments, businesses and communities to increase their awareness of El Niño weather conditions which were confirmed across the central Pacific Ocean at the time.
