Court Slams Govt Failure to Prevent South African Energy Crisis
The Pretoria High Court has ruled that numerous government failures caused load shedding, infringing on South Africans' basic rights in breach of the Constitution, News24 reports.
The December 1 ruling, written by Judge Norman Davis on behalf of a full bench of judges, ordered Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa to ensure by the end of January 2024 that "there shall be sufficient supply or generation of electricity to prevent any interruption of supply as a result of load shedding" to all public health facilities, all public schools, and the South African Police Service and police stations.

Dan Marokane is set to be appointed as chief executive officer of power utility Eskom, South African news website News24 reports. Marokane is currently CEO at sugar producer Tongaat-Hulett and was previously head of group capital at Eskom.
Eskom has been without a CEO since the resignation, and then early dismissal of Andre de Ruyter in February 2023.

Eskom board chairperson Mpho Makwana is expected to step down from his role at the power utility. This was announced by the Department of Public Enterprises in a statement. Makwana is expected to be replaced by current board member Mteto Nyati as chairperson, with a handover process to be done throughout October 2023.

The Treasury has withdrawn the decision which allowed Eskom to forego reporting irregular or wasteful expenditure. According to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, the decision was made after consultation with the auditor general and a public outcry.
