Somali Anger Over Somaliland Granting Ethiopia Access to Port

In a deal being described as "historic", landlocked Ethiopia has secured access to the Red Sea through a deal agreement with Somaliland, granting it use of the breakaway region's strategic Berbera port.

But the agreement was reported as a "surprise", and the government of Somalia has recalled its ambassador to Ethiopia, vowing to defend Somali territory by "all legal means possible".

Somaliland is a region in northern Somalia which declared independence from Somalia in 1991. Somaliland's sovereignty is not globally recognised, but it has a government and elections.

Ethiopia lost direct access to the coast after Eritrea's independence in 1993, and its been reliant on Djibouti's ports.
