Namibia's Geingob Memorials Evoke National Unity, Resolve
Memorials across the country of Namibia's third president and Sunday's burial at Heroes' Acre cemetery spotlighted the young nation's democratic institutions and smooth transition. Hage Geingob, 82, served twice as Prime Minister and was president from 2016 until his death on February 4, 2024. The funeral service included a 21-gun salute and a flyover by K-8 fighter jetst.
Geingob, who died from cancer, is survived by his two predecessors as well as his wife, Monica Geingos, eight children and three grandchildren. "In mourning Hage, Namibia became all the things he wanted it to be" - united and all pulling in the same direction, Geingos said in a moving tribute at Saturday's memorial service, which was attended by presidents from South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Finland President Sauli Niinistö, Sheikh Thani bin Hamad Al Thani from Qatar and Princess Anne from Brtain.
