South Africans Drum for Palestine at Human Rights Day Festival

The Human Rights Festival at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg echoed with the resounding beat of drums during the "One Thousand Drums for Palestine" event, writes Ihsaan Haffejee for GroundUp.

The event, organized by Bobby Rodwell, aimed to unite people through music in solidarity with Palestine, raising awareness about the situation in Gaza. Participants waved Palestinian flags and chanted "Free Palestine," expressing their support through music and communal spirit.

The event also featured a young child from Gaza reciting a poem to an enthusiastic audience. Following the drumming, author Zukiswa Wanner led a panel discussion, drawing attention to Germany's complicity in the ongoing conflict and advocating for a cultural boycott of Israel until Palestinian human rights are respected.

Participants drummed in unison at the “1000 Drums for Palestine”, part of the Constitution Hill Human Rights Festival.

A participant held up this poster during the event.

The sound of hundreds of drums reverberated through Constitution Hill in Johannesburg on Human Rights Day.
