30 Years On - South Africa Grapples with Human Rights

As South Africa celebrates 30 years of democracy, it is crucial to assess the ongoing challenges to the full enjoyment of human rights, writes Gugu Nonjinge for Daily Maverick. Human Rights Day serves as a poignant moment to reflect on the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, a tragic event that ignited a struggle against apartheid's gross violations.

Despite celebrating three decades of democracy, significant hurdles remain.Ã' South Africa still faces challenges in ensuring equal access to quality education and healthcare, a basic human right. Additionally, high crime rates threaten the right to safety and security.

To address these issues, "the government needs to implement strategies such as strengthening legal frameworks that promote equality, increasing public awareness and education on human rights, and encouraging community participation in upholding them," writes Nonjinge.
