Benylin Cough Syrup Recalled Over Possible Toxicity

Several African countries, including Tanzania, eSwatini, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, are recalling a batch of Benylin Paediatric children's cough syrup manufactured by Johnson & Johnson after tests in Nigeria found high levels of a toxic substance.

This comes after dozens of children died in other countries from contaminated cough syrup. Diethylene glycol is a dangerous toxin that can cause rapid kidney failure if ingested. The batch was manufactured in South Africa in 2021 and is being recalled as a precaution, even though no adverse effects have been reported so far in the recalling countries.

Over 70 Gambian children under five tragically lost their lives in 2022 after consuming cough syrups from Maiden Pharmaceuticals (India), which were later found to be contaminated.
