Niger Junta Expels Red Cross Without Explanation

The military junta in Niger has ordered the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to leave the country, without providing an official reason for the decision.

The ICRC, which has operated in Niger since 1990 and provided healthcare to over 120,000 armed conflict victims. Some foreigners working with the NGO in Niger have already left the country, and the delegation's office has been closed.

The junta came to power through a military coup in July 2023. It places high priority on national sovereignty. The junta also expelled French and American soldiers involved in anti-terrorism operations, and it has joined other Sahel countries in withdrawing from the Ecowas region.
