AU Declares Sudan War 'World's Worst Humanitarian Crisis'

African Union officials have declared Sudan's civil war, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as the "worst humanitarian crisis in the world", displacing around 12 million people and leaving hundreds of thousands of children malnourished.

The conflict has severely restricted humanitarian access, causing food shortages and widespread hunger, with hospital admissions for malnutrition rising. The AU has condemned grave violations, including attacks on schools and hospitals, forced recruitment of child soldiers, and the denial of aid, particularly in the RSF-controlled Darfur region.

Sudan's civil war, which erupted in April 2023, has forced more than 12 million people to flee their homes. The crisis has severely worsened conditions in Darfur, where airstrikes, shelling, and targeted attacks on civilians have deepened the humanitarian catastrophe.
