Outrage Over Nigerian Senate's Handling of Harassment Allegations

A Nigerian Senate ethics committee has dismissed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, abuse of office, and obstruction of legislative duties, citing that the matter was already before a court.

The petitioner, Zuberu Yakubu, representing the suspended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, accused the committee of bias and of denying him a fair hearing. The hearing descended into chaos, with Yakubu and his lawyer, Abiola Akiyode, condemning the Senate's inconsistency, while former minister of education Oby Ezekwesili clashed with Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi over procedural fairness.

After the petition was dismissed, Ezekwesili criticized the Senate for prioritizing internal rules over the Constitution and called for an independent panel to review the case, warning that procedural loopholes were being used to suppress justice.
