Nigeria Govt Bans Song Critical of President's Economic Policies

Nigerian authorities have banned a song critical of President Bola Tinubu and his administration's economic policies from being broadcast on radio and TV.

The song "Tell Your Papa" by Eedris Abdulkareem sharply criticizes Tinubu's economic record after two years in office, which has seen major protests over rising inflation and fuel prices. The Afrobeats track is addressed to the president's son, Seyi Tinubu, who has said his father was the greatest leader in Nigeria's history.

The National Broadcasting Commission deemed the track "inappropriate" and in violation of decency codes. Abdulkareem has hit back at the claims and urged his fans to stream the song online instead. "Tell Your Papa" was released on April 6 and includes lyrics in Yoruba, English, and Pidgin.

In 2004, the authorities banned Abdulkareem's song Jaga Jaga, in which he condemned the administration of then-President Olusegun Obasanjo as corrupt.
