Multi-Million Presidential Villa In Liberia Sparks Controversy

An ongoing construction of a presidential villa, said to be valued at U.S.$10 million, has sparked public debate over transparency and the use of government's resources. Not much was heard about the construction, which is taking place in the home town of President Joseph Boakai, until a prominent civil society activist, Eddie Jarwolo, questioned its rationale on social media.

"A factory that would create jobs and economic benefits for the residents of Lofa County could be built for US$10 million," Jarwolo wrote, saying erecting such luxury project in an area whose residents are "deprived of fundamental public services" shows the government's lack of priority.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Information has, however, dismissed suggestions that the villa is a private project of the president.
