Cameroon Opposition Claims Victory Ahead of Official Count

Opposition candidate Tchiroma Bakary has declared victory ahead of the official announcement of results from Sunday's presidential election. Bakary is reported to be making "significant" inroads in areas traditionally dominated by supporters of President Paul Biya

Nearly eight million Cameroonians went to the polls to vote in the country's presidential election in which the 92-year-old president is seeking to extend his 43-year rule.

Biya faces nearly a dozen challengers in the single-round process. Some analysts have said division within the opposition could clear the path for the president's reelection. The candidates were in full campaigning mode until Friday, having had just two weeks to do so before the October 12 election.

The ruling Cameroonian People's Democratoc Movement mostly campaigned for Biya without his physical presence. He did, however, make a last-minute appearance at a meeting in the far north of the country, telling his supporters that his decision to serve the country remains "in tact".
