Liberia Denies Being Under U.S. Pressure To Accept Salvadoran

There has been public uproar in Liberia following reports that a Salvadoran national, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, is set to be transferred to the country from the U.S. Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, at a hastily arranged news conference after the news broke, denied that the government is under diplomatic pressure to receive the Salvadoran.

Minister Nyanti said the government was approached through "formal diplomatic channels," and it agreed after assurances from U.S. authorities regarding his treatment and status." She said Garcia is not entering the country as a prisoner or criminal, and that his stay would be temporary.

The Salvadoran was illegally deported from the U.S. in March 2025, an action that was later described as an error by U.S. authorities. He has faced allegations of transporting undocumented migrants and gang membership.
