Maiduguri Bombings Reveal Escalating Danger to Nigerians - HRW

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged Nigerian authorities to urgently bolster civilian protection in high-risk zones and enhance early warning systems following the deadly bombings in Maiduguri earlier this month.

The attacks, on the evening of March 16, 2026, struck crowded public locations - including a market, a post office, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate - killing 23 people and injuring 108. HRW said the indiscriminate nature of the attacks constitutes a war crime under international law.

"The bombings in Maiduguri lay bare the extreme and ongoing danger civilians in northeastern Nigeria face from armed groups," said Anietie Ewang, Nigeria researcher at Human Rights Watch. Ewang said the resurgence of such violence is deeply alarming and "underscores the persistent threat armed groups pose to everyday life".
