HRW Calls on Sudanese Army to End Arbitrary Detention

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on Sudanese security forces to end the arbitrary detention, torture, and ill-treatment of civilians in areas under their control. The rights group said civilians are being detained for allegedly collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), often based solely on their ethnic identity, real or perceived political affiliations, or humanitarian work.

"Accounts by former detainees, their relatives, and lawyers paint a grim picture of arbitrary abuses emboldened by a climate of impunity," said Mohamed Osman, HRW's Sudan researcher.

HRW reported that it interviewed dozens of individuals, including former detainees and their families, between June 2025 and February 2026. The organization has also formally submitted its findings to the offices of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and the Attorney General.
