Nigerian Govt Charges Military Officers Over Alleged Coup Plot

The Nigerian government has formally charged several retired senior army officers for their alleged involvement in a plot to stage a coup and overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu. The defendants were arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja on a 13-count charge, including conspiring to "levy war against the state."

According to media reports, the suspected conspirators allegedly planned to storm the seat of power, seize the Presidential Villa, and capture President Tinubu along with other high-ranking officials. The plot reportedly involved at least 40 suspects, including serving officers drawn from the army's infantry and special forces units.

Also among those charged is Timipre Sylva, the former Governor of Bayelsa State, who previously served as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
