Rare Gathering of Liberia Opposition Leaders Under Spotlight
Opposition leaders have gathered at the private resort of former President George M. Weah for the reburial ceremony of his late father, sparking speculation about a potential political alliance. The meeting brought together former rivals, including Senator Amara Konneh, a key ally of the ruling Unity Party, as well as other prominent lawmakers.
The event took place amid criticisms of the government's demolition exercises, the rising cost of basic commodities, and the ongoing Liberia-Guinea border dispute. It also coincides with critiques of the administration's handling of dissent.
Addressing social media backlash regarding his attendance, Senator Konneh - formerly a staunch critic of Weah - thanked the former president for inviting his family to honor his father's memory. He said hearing Weah share "stories of his father's kindness, the circumstances of his passing, and heartfelt messages from gospel preachers" moved him deeply.
