Hantavirus Response Was Swift, Says South African Health Minister

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has briefed Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Health after the confirmation of Hantavirus in a critically ill British national in South Africa, and in a woman who collapsed at OR Tambo International Airport. She later died in South Africa. Her husband, a third patient, passed away in St Helena.

The deceased were passengers aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, which was sailing from Argentina to the Canary Islands via Cape Verde.

Authorities from Cabo Verde, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, and the United Kingdom have initiated a coordinated international response to the Hantavirus cases, including case investigation, isolation and clinical management, medical evacuation, and laboratory testing.
