South Sudan's former Vice President Riek Machar and his conspirators in an alleged coup attempt against President Salva Kiir may be facing treason charges. The announcement, made late Tuesday by the country's Justice Minister, Paulino Wanawila, could mean the death penalty for Machar and all those charged, if President Kiir sanctions the treason charge. VOA's John Tanza of the radio program, South Sudan In Focus, says the move threatens to deepen the political as well as the ethnic tensions in the country.
