2015 Africa Cup of Nations Finals

Fernando Varela of Cape Verde scores with a header, helping his team make history by qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals in their first Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Despite never having qualified for an Africa Cup of Nations finals tournament, Cape Verde has entered the campaign for Gabon/Equatorial Guinea 2012 with confidence. After an international friendly against Portugal ahead of the 2010 World Cup that resulted in a goalless draw, the Tubarões Azuis (Blue Sharks) drew strength from the result. Several of their own players play in Portugal, allowing them rare insight into the European squad's inner workings. The Blue Sharks have won several international competitions, such as the 2000 Amilar Cabral Cup and the Gold Medal in the 2009 Lusophony Games and while qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations presents them with the opportunity to claim the title of the best team on the continent, they have an uphill battle ahead, having been grouped with Mali, Liberia and Zimbabwe.
