Namibia: President Dr. Sam Nujoma to Receive Marketplace Award

Washington, D.C. — President Dr. Sam Nujoma Of The Republic Of Namibia To Receive Global Marketplace Award 1999 "Attracting Capital To Africa Summit" April 24-28, 1999.

President Dr. Sam Nujoma of the Republic of Namibia, at The Corporate Council on Africa's 1999 Attracting Capital to Africa Summit, will receive a Global Marketplace Award at the Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa, on Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Houston, Texas.

President Dr. Sam Nujoma, commenting on encouraging trade in Namibia said "We have some of the most attractive investment codes and trade policies on the continent, but we need to involve the private sector more." He went on to say, "We have seen globalization of commerce and investment...The Southern African subcontinent must adapt accordingly; it is the only way to remain competitive." Namibia's modern infrastructure, stable multi-party democracy, secure legal system reinforce this country's commitment to encouraging investment.

Namibia has been chosen as one of the recipients of the 1999 Global Marketplace Awards. The country's Foreign Investment Act and its tax-free exporting processing zones only reinforce the many reasons this county was selected to receive this prestigious award. These five awards are given biannually to countries that have opened their economies to the world market. Other 1999 awardees will include Botswana, Ghana, Egypt, and Mauritius.

The April 24-28, 1999 Attracting Capital to Africa Summit will bring together African Heads of State, senior U.S. decision-makers and private sector representatives from both continents for serious and candid discussions aimed at enhancing economic activity on the continent. Building on the momentum of the 1997 Attracting Capital to Africa Summit, which was the largest business meeting ever held on Africa in the U.S., the 1999 Summit will underscore the importance of Africa in the global economy.

President Dr. Sam Nujoma of the Republic of Namibia will be joined by President Festus Mogae, Republic of Botswana, Prime Minister Dr. Navichandra Ramgoolam, Republic of Mauritius, President Jerry Rawlings of the Republic of Ghana. Also participating in the Summit will be Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan of Cote d'Ivoire and President Omar Bongo.

Seven leading American businessmen will Co-Chair this Summit.
